Favorite quilts make your heart sing!

P1040175I hate to put this wall hanging away for the year.  It was sooo much fun to make!  Its colors are vibrant and the piece jumps off my wall.  I love it!

The pattern is called “Jubilee” by Details by Diane.

Each piece is machine applique stitched with Floriani machine embroidery thread.  It was a tad hard to handle with the fusible, but the drama of the sheen was well worth any extra work!

I quilted it on my frame with a black batting outlining each piece with black cotton thread.  I bound the quilt with more black Kona.  I can’t wait to make another quilt with this method!  I have patterns ready to go!

So many quilts, so little time!

This is one of my favorite wall hangings.

The pattern is called “Here comes Santa Claus” by Nancy J. Smith & Lynda S. Milligan of Possibilities.

I got the pattern at a long arm quilting group pattern exchange.  I didn’t know how to quilt the open spaces behind Santa until I saw this video by Nichole Webb

I confess, I stitched the holly using polyester machine embroidery thread and when I was done I did not like the color!  It was too light.  What did I do?  I colored each stitch with a darker green fine Sharpie marker.  Yup, I did!  Now I love it!  The Sharpie is permanent and the piece was saved without froggin’ (ripping out) all the background stitches just to change the color.  Win Win!!

It was easy and fun!  If you like her videos, here are 2 more, her Lobster Claw Flower and Swirly Hearts.  Have fun!

Achy teeth!

My teeth ache at the sweetness of two ornaments my daughter and granddaughters made me themselves!

P1040127

P1040127

Here the Santa is made from Piper’s handprint in salt clay.  (I believe Mommy had a little hand in the operation.)

Mommy got Addy’s tiny handprint on the backside of her ornament.  Aimee glittered the inside of the ball and used her fancy cutter to make the vinyl lettering!  How cool is that?

What did YOU sew for Christmas?

Now that Christmas has been here, I can share a few of my goodies!

This year I made several little t-shirts for my grandkidlets.  I found a great embroidery design shop online called Planet Applique and the designs were soooo cute!

P1040072P1040073

Here I am wrestling the little onesies inside the hoop, it was a little tight and if you know a better system, PLEASE let me know, I am all ears!

Do you see the black centering lines?  I used the FriXion pen everyone is talking about and I loved it for this!  It was easy to see, didn’t smear and ironed right off!  It think they are a score for embroidery!

P1040074

I made big sister/little sister shirts for the girls and a little onesie for Addy.

P1040079

I also made purses, journal covers and tissue covers for my bee buddies:

This was my inspiration tote; I just loved it and hoped my friends would, too!  I planned on making one for myself, maybe out it out on some blue wool from an old coat, but after making 5 of them, I may have made enough!  This is the tutorial I used at Me Sew Crazy.

Two new cars for Christmas!

Our family goes all out for Christmas!  It is not only a time to be together and eat eat eat, but we spend an entire year thinking about each other and planning gifts that will be “just” right for one another.

This year those perfect gifts included TWO new cars, or actually, a coup and a pickup truck!

Who were the lucky recipients?  No not hubby nor I, but two of our grandchildren, Piper and Bridger.  This is Justin and Bridger out for a test drive in the pickup that Uncle Luke made, it is sooooo cute!  (Aunt Aimee has vinyl lettering for it that says, “P---- Fire Dept.”  How cute will that be?

P1040115P1040114

The girls needed a more “girlie” vehicle and Daddy (with a little help from Santa???) worked and worked in Luke’s garage repainting and detailing a new car for Piper and Addy with great care.  It was just what Piper needed!

Can you find Piper?

Ha, Aimee just sent me this link to a magazine article, can you find Piper?

Yup, that little girl in the red dress is our little Piper!

The picture came out in 303 Magazine article called Miss BeFit K& the MHDSA Holiday Party written by Kailey Anderson on Dec 15, 2011.  Boy did Piper have fun!  (MHDSA = Mile High Down Syndrome Association)

Merry Christmas, little one!

Santa came to my house!

Santa came to my house!  A great big fire truck pulled right in front of our house and out jumped good ole Santa Claus!

The reindeer are still getting fattened up and ready for their big flight, so Santa came in big fire engine #2!  He had a pretty good escort, don’t you think?  (Just an aside, my DIL works for the city in the finance dept. and actually processed the paperwork for this engine!)

Santa visited with 6 month olds B and Addy; this is their first Christmas!

Two and a half year old Piper was very interested in Santa.  Here she is asking who he is.

Cuteness Overload!

If, by chance, you do not follow my daughter’s blog, you simply HAVE to see it today!  You can check it out HERE.  Aimee and Luke took their little girls to the annual Mile High Down Syndrome Christmas party last Saturday and Aimee has pictures and a video up on the blog.

Okay, I’m prejudice, but golly my granddaughters are actual dollies!  Here is a sneak peek of Piper dancing.  Nana loves you, Sweethearts!

Another Vintage Sheet Quilt

P1040026I’ve had this quilt finished for several weeks.  I had intended on getting it up on Etsy ASAP, but haven’t yet.  Here is a sneak peek!

I pulled my favorite sheets for this quilt.  I have one block with green dots that are that ‘30s green, love them!  I used a cute simple sheet for the back that is snugly soft.  I quilted it with a simple pantograph, per several suggestions.  Maybe it is a bit more different feel.  It is bound with the same fabric as I used for the back.

Cathy’s gift

I L-O-V-E journals!  My favorite is the old stand-by 9.75” x 7.5” composition book you can get almost anywhere.  I am picky; they be narrow ruled (college) or in graph paper and must have heavy covers.  Composition books are just the right size to tote around in my bag to make notes on, or keep information for occasions in.  I keep them with lists of what I cooked for the last holiday and what I made that I liked and didn’t like.  I keep one for sewing/quilting/embroidery notes.  I also keep one with measurements for projects I design, or have in my mind.  When I was shopping for a new stove, I kept one to keep my comparisons in along with addresses and prices.  How do I keep track of them all?  By their covers, of course!  I’ll post pictures of them sometime.

You might have guessed, I make covered journals for my friends, too.  Here is one I made for Cathy this year for Christmas.  It is one of my favorites.  The outside is 100% linen and P1010988the lining and binding are quilting cottons.  I always quilt them using thin batting simple quilting.  I serge all my seams for strength, these babies can stand a lot of action.

The embroidery on Cathy’s cover is from ABC Embroidery Designs – Anna Bove Embroidery.  It is from a font set called Victorian Whitework.  They are waaaaay on sale now, if you are interested j-u-m-p!  I paid a bunch more a couple of years ago when the set first come out.  I’ve used it several times and they stitch out wonderfully in a bit less than an hour.  Do you like it?

P1010987P1010986

I considered listing journals on Etsy, but they take several hours to put together.  I guess I’ll keep them for myself!

I love Christmas!

My favorite part of Christmas is making gifts for friends and family.  I spend months deciding what to make.  Pinterest has been a great help because I keep “all” of my ideas in one place and don’t have to bookmark, or print, them all.  It allows me to keep pictures at my finger tips and not just a line in my bookmarks.  I love it!

Today I made 2 onesies for my grandson.  Aren’t they cute?  They stitched out very easily.  I recommend Planet Embroidery designs after stitching several of their designs out.  Take a look yourself!  Think he’ll like them?

Trees are up! Bring Christmas on!

I have FOUR Christmas trees that I put up each year.  Yup, four!

They started with our typical big tree that was filled (stuffed) with our kid’s ornaments from us and their grandparents.  Tree one!

P1040004When hubby’s grandfather passed on, we inherited his foil tree and used it for years.  When Aimee’s boyfriend (now hubby!) and my son were in the service, the foil tree was replaced with a four foot pre-lit tree that was filled with patriotic ornaments.  Tree two.

Years passed and Aimee married and the ornaments she received from us and her grandparents each year went to her new home.  Justin married and his left, too.  By this time our typical tree was pretty sad!  The day after Christmas I set off to remedy that situation!

I lucked onto a big sale at Dillards one year and I got loads of Native American and western-type ornaments.  The turquoise garland was too much to resist!  The dolls were just so cute!  Each year I added to it. Soon I needed a larger tree.  Meet the after-Christmas 6.5 foot skinny tree from Dillards!  That makes 3 trees.

P1010875P1010877P1010879

P1010873Next came a tree for my machine embroidered ornaments and snowflakes – tree four.

Justin was home from the Seabees and Luke from the Marines now so the patriotic ornaments joined the traditional tree.  Everything seemed stable back with 3 trees -for a bit.  Hubby could handle that!

UNTIL we became grandparents!  We needed a tree for the grandkids!  I found the cutest non-traditional colored ornaments and after Christmas I had the ornaments for another 4th tree!  I LOVE it!

That’s it – four trees and I love (need) them all!

Thank you, BFF!

When it comes to time, quality trumps quantity!

I adore my best friend, she brings out my best side and encourages me all the time.  This fall we haven’t found time to get together as much as we’d like, but when we do, it’s like we’ve never been apart.

P1010989Today we had one of those afternoons.  We talked, laughed and exchanged gifts.  Look at the cuties she brought me!  She knows me so well!  My family room is full of quilts and trees, these cuties look just PERFECT in my kitchen, don’t you think so, too?

The darling towel in the background matches my kitchen perfectly, it says “kindred spirits” – how true!

What you cannot see is the sparkly sheen on the stars.  It is perfect!  The “J-O-Y” matches my table runner perfectly!  Love them!

Thanks, Cathy!

Remember these stockings?

P1010674

Waaaaay back on November 3rd, I teased you with pictures of Christmas stockings my mother had made for my two youngest grandchildren.

Grandma/Great-grandma has given them to the little ones, so now I can show you.  When I had posted, they didn’t know which stocking went to which little one.

Mom has made stockings for my brother and I, our spouses and children.  Now she has made 3 for her great-grandchildren.  She finds a pattern which represents each of our interests, or personalities.  They are treasured heirlooms!

Thank you, Mom!  We all love you AND our stockings!

Here is my stocking and hubby’s along with the two bitty stockings that Mom made my children for their first Christmas.  THEY stay at MY house, grin.
