Happy World Down Syndrome Day!

P1040390

Hello Blog land!  Today is:

WORLD Down Syndrome Day!

You know, March 21 – 3/21 – because individuals with Down syndrome have 3 copies of their 21st chromosome.

The world is a better place because you are in it, Piper!  (And you, too, Addy, of course!)

END the r-word. Today!

I HATE the word retard!  No matter HOW you use it!  Even when it is used it to describe someone jokingly – it HURTS.

Please don’t use it flippantly.

Please don’t use it to describe MY granddaughter.  Yes, she has Down syndrome, but she has just as much to a fulfilling life as you and I do!

NO, she does NOT suffer!  Not at all!

This video is as cute as can be; take a look and promise you won’t use the R-word, or stand by as others around you do.

Thank you!  This means a lot to me!  It IS a big deal!

Can you find Piper?

Ha, Aimee just sent me this link to a magazine article, can you find Piper?

Yup, that little girl in the red dress is our little Piper!

The picture came out in 303 Magazine article called Miss BeFit K& the MHDSA Holiday Party written by Kailey Anderson on Dec 15, 2011.  Boy did Piper have fun!  (MHDSA = Mile High Down Syndrome Association)

Merry Christmas, little one!

Cuteness Overload!

If, by chance, you do not follow my daughter’s blog, you simply HAVE to see it today!  You can check it out HERE.  Aimee and Luke took their little girls to the annual Mile High Down Syndrome Christmas party last Saturday and Aimee has pictures and a video up on the blog.

Okay, I’m prejudice, but golly my granddaughters are actual dollies!  Here is a sneak peek of Piper dancing.  Nana loves you, Sweethearts!

Halloween Party

So, my camera battery died and I only got a few pictures of the first Halloween party of our day and not ONE of the second party, darn.  (I’m sure it had nothing to do with the fact that I took 200 pictures in Estes Park last week…)

The Key Club at Arapahoe High School puts on Halloween party and Easter egg hunt each year for Denver area children with Down syndrome and their siblings.  The event was well planned and students had different activities in about 25 decorated rooms for the children to interact, play and discover in.  A great time was had by all!

The Girl Scouts made S’mores for the Trick-or-Treaters, but Piper was satisfied with the graham cracker!

AND, she met Burt in person!  Any doubt she had about him being the real Burt was decided after thoughtful inspection.  He was an imposter!

Piper saw someone inside those eyes and wanted to get this situation sorted out right here and now!  The high school student was very patient as intrigued Piper investigated the guise.  She kept a close eye on Bernie after that.

Thanks Arapahoe High School.  The event was a hit and brought a lot of joy to a bunch of great kids!

See you next year!

October is Down syndrome month!

This is an awesome month!  Loads of bloggers will be posting all month long about Down syndrome.  It is a great opportunity to share what Ds IS, as well as what it is NOT!

Being a grandmother of a absolutely darling child that is short, smart, funny, polite (I could go on and on here you know) whom also just happens to have Down syndrome, I encourage you to visit some of these blogs.

Start off by visiting my daughter's blog, if you like, and meet their family.  On the sidebar you will find lots of blogs of other families that also have darling little kidlets with an extra chromosome.

Be prepared, because there is going to be an abundance of cute pictures this month!

Nana loves you, sweet Piper!  I wouldn’t change a thing about you!

2011 Walk for Down syndrome

Today was the Mile High Down Syndrome Association’s annual “Step UP for Down Syndrome” walk in City Park, Denver.

Whew!  It is over for another year!  What a fun time with family and friends we had today!  It was a perfectly lovely fall day and the company was just grand!  We walked the 2 miles then visited under our canopies, had picnics and played with the children.

Before the walk started, everyone with Down syndrome was invited to bandstand for a big group picture.  My daughter, son-in-law, and hubby were at the truck unloading, so Piper and I went up for the picture.  Everyone was there and clapping and getting ready for the walk to begin.  I took Piper up and left her with the other kids; she turned around and looked at the crowd clapping and assumed they were clapping for her!  She was simply delighted with all the attention she was getting!  Her bright yellow hair and blue walk t-shirt glowed in the morning light.  Everyone was laughing at our cute little munchkin standing out in front.  It was a great start to a great day!

Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk - 2011

Last year almost 3,500 participants attended! $240,000 was raised for programs.

You might have guessed, I have a sweet sweet granddaughter with Down syndrome. She is my first grandchild and the light of my heart. This is my favorite picture of us. It was the first time I ever held her! Piper was just a bit over 3 pounds!P1010363
Find out what Down syndrome really looks like on my daughter’s blog here: http://aimeesbowlofcherries.blogspot.com/

October is National Down Syndrome Awareness month, so I’ll add more facts then, but here are just a few:
  • One of every 690 lives births will be a baby with Down syndrome. 6,000+ babies are born with Down syndrome in the US every year.
  • The average age of women having a baby with Down syndrome is 28.
  • 80% of babies born with Down syndrome are born to mothers younger than 35.
  • Most people with Down syndrome have mild to moderate mental retardation, some less and some higher.
I hope to see you at the walk, or find a walk in your area!

Aimee's Bowl of Cherries

My daughter has been blogging for a couple of years now. She has always had a wonderful way with words and her blog is simply delightful! Aimee started her blog several months after her first child was born. Her blog focuses on her family, but started out with her Piper. Piper was born with Down syndrome. If you have a moment, I highly recommend that you check her blog out. I just bet you will be surprised at what Down syndrome REALLY looks like! Needless to say, Piper is a doll and is the apple of everyone's eye, not just nana's!
Here are a couple of teaser pictures of 2 year-old Piper and her baby sister Adalynn aka Addy. Addy was born in May along with her cousin Bridger. Aimee and her husband, Luke, have their hands full of goodness! ~ Robbie
