Making an Ornament Tree

P1010766

Wow, don’t these look like fun????  Now I need MORE bulbs after Christmas!  I think it is more practical since I have dogs and not cats!

I saw this display at Crate and Barrel early in the season.  The Home Depot version below may be more within my budget, but I love the alligator clips on the C & B one and of course the bulbs are soooo cute!

If you try this, ya just gotta let me know how it works!

Time to get ready! Christmas is coming!

Santa Claus is coming to our house on Thursday, December 1st, so Grandpa get the trees up!

Putting up 4 trees every year is a bit of a challenge, especially in a small home, but by golly I do it!  I have a 7 foot traditional tree, a 4 footer with embroidered snowflakes and balls, a 6 foot tall western tree, and another 4 footer that has been a patriotic tree, but last year turned turquoise, purple, bright green and hot pink!  It’s been awhile since my son and son-in-law were in the Navy and Marines and now we have grandkidlets, so I upped the color quotient!

Merry Christmas QuiltI have lots of wall hangings and table runners, and quilts for the season, too. This is one of my favorites.  It is an Art to Heart pattern; ya gotta love those books, and I have a bunch of them!
This wall hanging is called “Merry Christmas Quilt” from I Believe by Art To Heart.  I appliqued the bits by machine with a tiny blanket stitch. I then stitched an inch thick piece of poly batting to the under side using wash away thread in the top and cream on the back around each letter.  Next, I trimmed meticulously around each letter so there was no batting behind the background, only under the letters and leaves.  Next I loaded the piece on my frame as usual (backing, cotton batting, and the top) and stitched around each letter exactly on top of the applique stitching in the same dark thread as not to show.  I did not do any stitching in the cream background as the design was small and didn’t need it to poof the letters out.  I worried that more stitching would take away from overall design and distract from the letters.  I achieved the trapunto effect without it effectively here probably because of the size.   I think the buttons are my favorite part, along with the turquoise fabric because it is unexpected.  Choosing and cutting a different fabric for each letter took as much time as appliqueing these pieces, but I like the variety.  I quilted piano keys in the outside dark border and used trapunto in the red border for dimension.

Art to Heart patterns make me look good!

Happy Turkey Day!

We have a turkey and each year it “pops” out of his box this time of year.   Piper was somewhat more interested this year, but still isn’t sure “why” we have a big balloon in our front yard.  For the record, neither does Grandpa, but the turkey makes Nana happy.

Our family celebrates Thanksgiving the Sunday for the traditional day.  This year we had a busy, fun day with lots of food; it was so nice to be together.

Thanks for coming everyone!  Grandpa and I love you all!  We have so very much to be thankful for and you grandkidlets, kids (& spouses, of course!) and parents are at the top of our list!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

Piper’s Blanket

Do you follow Kellie Wulfsohn’s Don't Look Now blog?  I do!  I adore her sense of color, humor, and design.  Kellie shares several free patterns on her blog and teaches you her applique and quilting methods.  You can find this pillow pattern here:  Flower Garden Pillow Tutorial.  The second pillow is mine, it was a lot of fun to make and gave me a chance to try out her technique.

P1010776

Luckily, we can now purchase Kellie’s patterns here in the United States at Twiddletails.com and a few other venues; I had to order my first one from Australia.  This pattern is Pretty in Pink.  My daughter and I made a wall hanging using the large pillow pattern and adhering fussy-cut fabric pieces to an artist matt board; it really turned out cute.

Using the purchased pattern and the pillow as inspiration, I made a simple baby quilt for Piper keeping with the theme for her room.  She loves the minky back and ruffled pink ribbon.  Mommy made cute flower pictures to match for Piper’s walls, too.  Her room is darling and very girlie!

I have also made this little pillow from another of Kellie’s tutorials called Honey Bunny; have you ever seen anything so cute???

Kellie’s blog is worth the visit, I hope to see you there!

Happy Thanksgiving–tomorrow!

Grandpa and Nana’s tradition is to have Thanksgiving on the Sunday before the traditional holiday.  It really has worked well for our families.  No one has to run across town to eat a second dinner and everyone gets to relax and enjoy their families on BOTH days!  So, think of us tomorrow if you would be so kind, and I’ll post pictures when things calm down after dessert!

Shoppin’ with Nana

Last week Piper and I went shopping – just the two of us.  Mommy and baby Addy were swimming with Aunt Rachel and baby Bridger.

Boy, did we have fun!  Piper saw loads of Christmas trees – they were e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e!!

P1010685P1010686

Piper’s favorite department was the shoe department – little surprise there!  We talked about looking for a Christmas present that mommy might like.  Piper studiously examined them all!

P1010683P1010681P1010682

These were her favorites.  Shhhhh, don’t tell Mommy!!  Maybe Santa will be bringing them!

Piper kept signing “doggy.”  I remember reading recently that the raccoon dog from China is used in some Ugg boots. I sure didn’t tell Piper about that!  These are 100% fake fur, Mommy!

Gnome in the Trees quilt

P1010695

Christmas is coming and it’s fun thinking about getting my trees up and all our traditional things that make it “that” time of year again!

I made this wall hanging to fit on a little wall I have, it always makes me smile!  The trees and gnome are stitched in the ditch and the outlined trees are hand stitched.

I was inspired by this tutorial at the Purl bee: Little Forest Quilt tutorial, isn’t it cute??  YOU can make one, too!

Little Bridger

P1010692

I want to introduce you to my little grandson, Bridger.

He is 5.5 months old and the son of my son and his lovely wife.  B-man lives near, so Grandpa and I are able to see him often.

We are sooo lucky!

Isn’t he cutest little guy you have ever seen?

BTW, I made this quilt from fat quarters that my daughter and son-in-law gave me for my 50th birthday.  There were 50 black fat quarters!  It took my daughter a long time to collect them all!  She presented them all bundled in a black basket with a black bow, you get the idea.  The babies have all enjoy the quilt as much as I do!

What???? Stitch!!!

So I’m talking with my daughter Aimee on the phone this morning and look up to see this:

P1010656

Stitch is NOT on our hardwood floors, noooooo…  she is laying ON TOP of my coffee table!  Apparently, that is where the sun is!  She looked up, only partially interested mind you, as if to say, “Yes?” and put her head back down.  I certainly did not disturb her!  Needless to say, the dog was moved to the floor and the table was moved back to its usual place.

I cannot believe she’d do that!  Her attitude makes me wonder if she has done that before!  Little stinker!  Shhhhhh, don’t tell hubby!

Stinkin’ Cute!

Aimee is my favorite daughter.  (Yup, I only have ONE daughter, grin.)  She has the two cutest daughters ever!  The girls love each other to bits and love to laugh, too!

Machine Embroidery

I love my embroidery machine.

I have all kinds of designs and will never get to a portion of them, grin.  THIS design is one of my favorites.  I love that it shows so many birth details.  The baby’s weight -- the postal fee.  The birth town and state are on the date stamp along with the date of birth.  The time stamp is the birth time and the baby’s name is on the bottom of the design in the pink (or could be blue!).

P1000468

The design comes in two sizes, one for my 4x4 frame and one for my 5x7 inch frame.  These stitch-outs were both on the 5x7 and measure 6.5” x 3.75”.  I made the pillow below for a friend’s grandbaby.  I was really please with the way it turned out.  The spunky pink print really set off the design.  The design above is for a neighbor of mine and the thread color is more of a candy pink tone.  I think I will make it into a white pillow with lots of white lace.  Do you think they will like it?

111 Pillow spray

I wonder, could I sell the stitched designs to moms and grandmothers for them to finish, or if folks would pay to have the pillow assembled for them?  The design takes one hour to stitch out and about 30 minutes to do digitize and place the wording.

Let me know what you think!  I would love an opinion!

My whole house a quilting studio?!

My adult children cannot move back home!  Aimee’s room now houses my quilting machine, her closet is my stash, and the desk my table.  Justin’s room is the grandbaby’s room!

Just tellin’ you kids; it’s not like you didn’t know it already know though, grin.

So, I’ve kinda crept into the family room, too…  The library table really makes a great sewing space.  The room is large and easily affords setting up long tables to put binding on, etc.  It works just fine with “the girls” come over to sew, too.

BUT, if my hubby saw these photos, I think he’d be over the top!  I’m sure he doesn’t have plans for our pie safe and piano to be sewing storage.  Then again, do you think he’d notice???

Here is some of my inspiration; gotta L-O-V-E Pinterest!!!

(See that Hoosier?  My mom has one and someday they are going to go on vacation and when they come home, it’s gonna be missing!  Maybe I’ll put some shelving there and they won’t notice!)

Christmas is coming!

It is almost time to dig out the Christmas decorations!  Yippee!  It’s time to finish all those projects still in the hopper, too!

I have 2 projects of love that have been waiting for me.  My mother made each of her grandchildren cross stitched Christmas stockings.  When Piper was born she decided to continue the tradition and made a stocking  for her first great grandchild.  This year she has two more great grandchildren (Bridger and Addy will be 6 months old on Christmas – golly, is that hard to believe!!).  Mom worked for months this year on stockings for the newest babies, she started before they were even born!  Now it is my turn to make them into stockings.  I have to get done by Thanksgiving!

Here is a sneak peak – I don’t want to spoil the surprise!  Mom does a great job, doesn’t she??

I can’t wait to show you the finished stockings!  They’ll be back after Thanksgiving!

Baby, it’s cold outside!

P1010571It is a  snowy day in Denver.

It’s not that cold, but it looks it!

(I ran out with my camera in my pajama shorts and barefoot, grin.)  We’re still under a Winter Storm Warning, but most of the snow fell during the night.  There is a Blizzard Warning for the eastern plains with the possibility of 0 percent visibility because of window.

40 flights have been cancelled right now out of DIA.  Three school districts are closed, mostly south and west of town, with numerous small school and business closings.  Denver schools are not closed.

So far we have about 7 to 8” of snow with snow expected to continue through this afternoon.  It has stopped at the tunnels - two 1.6 mile long bored tunnels through the continental divide - and so it will be stopping here in the next couple of hours, too.

We’re under “accident alert.”  If you are in an accident trade information and get to the police in the next four days.  There are too many accidents for them to handle.  The highways are very backed up.

This site is fun!  It has live webcams of Denver and the mountains:  LIVE WEBCAMS

Terry hasn’t gone to work yet, so he’s shoveling – with help!  Hershey is playing ball, of course!

The snow makes everything so pretty if you don’t have to drive in it.  We love snow in Denver!

What is fall like where YOU live??

Little Flag Quilt

P1010565

I picked up this quilt kit from the Pearl P. Pereira Designs (aka P3 Designs) booth at a quilt show.  It is fun to do little projects sometimes and lets you practice your skills.  The berries, and the ball on the flag pole, are 3/8” across.  I raw edge appliqued the little quilt and then hand quilted it.

P1010568SOMEDAY….

I want to make P3 Design’s Baltimore Halloween Quilt!  Do you want to join me??
